Perfect Portion

“My flesh and my heart may fail, but God is the strength of my heart and my portion forever!!” Psalm 73:26

It was a rainy afternoon as I sat in my kitchen and cried. I looked around and my eyes saw an overwhelming pile of laundry, dishes piled in my sink, toys everywhere. My ears heard little voices with needs only I could meet. My heart felt the absence of a husband whose work required him to be away. The strength I often found pride in, crumbled. I couldn’t do this by myself. I didn’t just need another pair of hands, although that would be nice, I needed someone to fill in the gap – the gap that exists between me and what I needed to be. I needed a good portion of God.

I was reminded of the scriptures that refer to the Lord as our “portion.” While not the characteristic of God that is the most popular in our vocabulary, this attribute is an anchor for our restless, weary souls. Webster defines a portion as, “an individual’s part or share of something as received by gift or inheritance.” For believers, it is presence of God resting within us to do for us what we can’t do for ourselves.

He is exactly what we need in the right amount. Never too little, never too much (as if there is such a thing as too much!!), never too early, never too late. Just enough strength to sustain us, just enough peace to calm us, just enough love to help us love those who are difficult to love, just enough grace to free us. He is all those things and just the right amount that we need Him to be.

This word “portion” is also particularly convicting for women. Isn’t it like a woman to notice when others have a greater portion than she does?! Maybe “she” has a better financial situation, a more supportive husband, or just a husband at all for that matter. Maybe “she” has well-behaved children or better hair! You name it and we have compared it. However, when we focus on the Lord as all we need, we gain perspective of why we were created…to bring honor and glory to Him.

We may require a greater portion of some things than other people, or a smaller portion than another person. We may require more strength in some moments and in other moments we may be in desperate need of peace. Since He created us, He knows the depth of each need and can perfectly provide! He is more than enough!

Thank you, Lord, for being my perfect portion. You alone satisfy. In Jesus name, Amen.
