Competence

“Not that we are competent in ourselves to claim anything for ourselves, but our competence comes from God.” 2 Corinthians 3:5

“Competent: capable, having the necessary ability, knowledge, or skill to do something successfully.”

Even the very definition of that word has me feeling “less than.” Truthfully, I often feel incompetent and lacking in most areas of life: marriage, parenting, relationships, ministry, skill sets, all of the above. Even in my personal strengths, I am met daily with challenges that I simply do not feel equipped to handle.

Could we believe God when we tells us that in our incompetency, He displays His glory? In every “less than” moment, He desires to show His competency in broken creations like you and me. We can shrink back and wallow in what we lack, or I can lay very low before Him and let Him cast a massive shadow of grace over me. Picture with me what our daily endeavors would look like if there was nothing to see but Him over us, Him covering us. How courageous would be be if we trusted in His competency over our own?

Friends, our competence comes from God alone. He, in us, is competent for every single task to which we are called. With that certainty in your back pocket at all times, what could possibly overtake you today?

Father, you are strong and competent. Remind me today that my competency comes from you and you alone. In Jesus name, Amen.
