A CELEBRATION OF MISSIONS
Celebration is an annual event hosted by WMU that includes a delicious meal, creative tablescapes, worshipful music, and an inspiring missions-related speaker. Vicki Heath was WMU director at our church when the first Celebration took place in the mid-1990s. Betty Malone, who served as WMU director prior to Mrs. Heath, had visited a friend’s church that hosted a similar event. Mrs. Malone came home encouraging FBJ to give it a try. Almost 25 years later, ladies of a variety of ages look forward to participating in and attending Celebration.
The beautiful tablescapes are always a highlight of Celebration. FBJ women volunteer to use their creative gifts to decorate a table. Often, ladies choose their decor to represent a mission trip, a ministry project in which they are involved, or a ministry of our church, such as a Bible study. It is always so fun to see how women use their individuality to come up with a unique centerpiece and table design.
While the tables are indeed lovely, Celebration represents so much more. Vicki Heath quoted a lady who eagerly attended Celebration for many years. She would buy tickets for friends of another faith. The lady said, “they come to see the tablescapes, but I wanted them to meet Jesus.” Celebration is certainly a time to meet Jesus, to celebrate all He has done in our lives, to celebrate missions here in Jackson and around the world, and to fellowship with other ladies. Philippians 4:4 comes to mind when thinking of Celebration. “Rejoice in the Lord always. Again I will say, rejoice!”
